Dr. Karen Stead-Dexter is a renowned Teacher and Practitioner specialising in Animal and Nature Connection for Well-Being.
Dr Karen is an expert in how much our relationship with the ‘non-human’ world affects our well-being. Her fundamental principle is to work with nature and animals, not using or exploiting them. She has dedicated her life to understanding nature and animals at a deep level, and learning how we can live sustainably on this earth.
After graduating in Environmental Science, she specialised with a Masters degree in nuclear physics, and uses her knowledge of quantum physics in her energy medicine work. Her PhD proved how certain plants naturally heal the damage to soil from man-made contamination, and she lectured at the University of Surrey whilst working in Eco-Toxicology research and Environmental Management consultancy. Dr Karen works with techniques that modern science is only just beginning to understand, and insists on an evidence-based approach, but she is known for bringing her scientific knowledge to her teaching in an accessible and relevant way.
Dr Karen’s work is rooted in personal experience. After persistent health problems as a child and a car accident in her twenties that left her with chronic pain, she has faced continual physical and mental health challenges and has had to adapt to chronic fatigue, adrenal failure, and severe allergies. With her scientific background, she learned in detail how conventional medicine treated these conditions, and experienced where it was not able to resolve her conditions long term.
Dr Karen found that alternative approaches like reflexology, homeopathy and energy medicine helped her, and has spent more than 30 years learning to use these approaches alongside medication-based approaches. Inspired to help others, Dr Karen qualified to practice Reiki, Seichem, Munay-ki and Plant Essences and has studied extensively how indigenous and ancient civilisations work with plants, animal and elements for healing.
Dr Karen has been fascinated by and has loved birds of prey since childhood. By chance her environmental career introduced her to falconry through the use of birds of prey for pest control on landfill sites but she took an entirely different approach to working with these magnificent creatures. For Karen, birds of prey are partners and teachers, not a resource to be used. She has been a respected falconer for more than 20 years, and most of her birds were rescued from injury or owners who were not able to care for these wild creatures as she was. Her birds of prey have been an integral part of her learning and teaching for many years and are part of what makes her therapy and teaching practice so unique.
